    How diffucult is it to change out the stock magazine to a detachable mag. on Yugo SKS ? and is there a preference on the manufacture of the mag to use?

    I have thought about doing that with my Yugo SKS but dozens and dozens of people have advised me that there is nothing out there that will function as reliably as the factory 10 round mag. Just get some stripper clips if you feel a need to quickly blast off more than 10 rounds.

    If you want detachable mags buy an AK.


    Edited to add: Most of us played around with USA detachable magazines back in the 90's. They are a waste of time, dollars, and energy.

    One of the major problems with them is that they almost require 3 hands to get them in and out of the gun. One needs to hold the bolt back on the rifle while holding the rifle up. The other hand needs to rock the mag in. It's not very easy.

    In fact it's 3x faster to use strippers on a 10rd fixed magazine.

    I have a fixed 20rd Chinese mag that replaces the fixed 10rd magazine. Even that is goofy too. The 1st stripper clip of 10rds goes in normal. The 2nd stripper clip requires you to hold the bolt back and hold up the rifle.

    As mentioned below if you want more capacity out of an SKS, look for a SKS-D or SKS-M, both take standard AK47 mags.

    The SKS is a good rifle for what it is. Leave it alone and enjoy it for what it is.

    part of basic disassembly / assembly to remove and replace or leave out the magazine. also agree with tr fox on keeping it stock.

    Taking out the standard fixed magazine is easy.

    Finding replacement detachable magazines that actually WORK? That's hard.

    By the way, my personal gripe with Yugo SKS rifles isn't the capacity. Short of taking one into an actual firefight, I'm plenty happy with 10 rounds, and these reload quickly and easily from stripper clips (which are less bulky than detachable magazines, more reliable, less expensive, and legal everywhere).

    My beef with the Yugo SKS rifles is the long super-creepy trigger. There are very few rifles where you can pull a trigger half-way, but this appears to be one of them!

    If I were concentrating on "fixing" something on one of these, I'd look there first.

    The only thing I would recommend is the Chinese fixed 20 rounder. The problem is it is not a direct fit and you will have to do some work to get it to fit. If you are not capable of doing some minor gun smithing
    then don't do it yourself. Find a gunsmith or some one more knowledgeable. You can find these mags but it will take some searching.
    When you can find one expect to pay in the $65 neighbor hood for one.
