tough to open

I have 2 old SXS Stevens, 16 and 12 ga, very good shape, but hard to break open after firing, am I missing something? thanks

  I think you answered your own question. Those guns tend to be stiff until you break them in with a couple thousand rounds. Even after that they are still a little tight. The tolerances on these guns are not the best as they were made as a low end entry double barrel. You might try taking the stock off and oiling the moving parts (recocking mechanism), then working the oil in real good.

  Check the fired primers for deep scratches. Your cocking levers may be slow.
  
  I ran into this on an old Spanish box lock. The firing pins were draging on the hull as the action opened. What I found was excessive wear on the forend iron.
  
  Your gun may use the forend iron or it may have a lug on the underside of the barrels to activate the cocking lever.
