STEYR ZEPHYR .22 1957

My grandson was recently given a Steyr Zephyr by a friend of mine who had purchased it approx. 1957 and over the years had only shot a few rabbits with it. It had been unused for a long time, and knowing how keen Flynn (grandson) is on hunting he decided to pass it on. We would appreciate any information about this as I think it may be quite rare and of interest to collectors. I will post a photo if anyone is interested.

    During the 50's, Stoeger,(at that time a large U.S. importer/distributor of firearms and sporting goods), imported and sold various Steyr guns. Most of them were high dollar Mannlicher-Schonauer rifles. It's possible that the rifle your inquiring about was never imported and sold commercially in the States.

    The Steyr Zephyr .22 was regularly advertised in the Shooter's Bible in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s when Stoeger was the US distributor for Steyr. They apparently sold a lot more Mannlicher Schoenauer centerfires by Steyr than they did .22s. The Zephyr is EXTREMELY scarce, I have seldom even seen one and they are rarely offered for sale.

    The first Steyr Zephyr I saw was in 1954 in the sporting goods section of Higbee's Dep't. store on Cleveland. price: $94.00. next was in 1988 at a gun show in CT: price $600. Next at my local range: NFS. There have been two on auction recently: sold>$2,000.
