US Military .22 Rifles

Does anyone know if the US military ever used bolt action .22 rifles for training other then target shooting?

    Yes, they absolutely did, and also had a marksmanship program using them. I believe the boatload of the earlier ones were the Mossberg 44's.

    YES ! when i trained at USNTC Bainbridge MD. in 1955 (the year my wife was born !) i shot what i think was a Winchester bolt action, it could have been a Remington, it did not look like the photo that 336marlin posted. being a shooter since i was 12 y.o. i shot the best score of my company and damn near broke the record of any recruit.., 3 points from breaking the record.

    Ahhhhh.....what it would be like to be young again......that was 10 years before I was born! Now at almost 45 years old, my eyes are just starting to signs of stigmatism.

    i was given one like that but with no sights and a scope installed.i have had it for about 12 years and never fired it.

    sfintruder.....the US military also used the bolt action Remington 512, a great little .22. I don't have one but several of my friends do and they love to shoot them. Very accurate. But I imagine that they were used for target shooting also as the two that I have seen are the target model. Neat little guns.

    Several rifles- mainly Mossbergs but a few Remingtons come to mind- for Basic Marksmanship training. My Mossberg 44US was actually made in 1943, and is still a GREAT shooter. And the Army STILL uses .22s- in the form of an adapter for the M-16 that permits firing .22LR.

    BTW, the US Army has also used BB guns for training- started during Vietnam, teaching point shooting- known as "Quick Kill".

    There were 12 production models used by the military for training.
    Pre WWII:

    Winchester Winder Musket
    Winchester Model 1903
    Springfield M1922, 1922M1, 1922M2
    Winchester Model 52
    There was also a Krag conversion and M1903 Hoffer Thompson, but not put into full production.

    WWII offerings:
    Remington M513-T
    Winchester M75
    Stevens M416-2-T
    Mossberg M42MB
    H&R M65
    Mossberg M44US

    And a slew of post war trainers including an M16 conversion.

    Edit: OOps, scratch the M1903, it was a semi.
