Just aguired a 1887 10 guage and was wondering what it's worth

    Hello Keith,

    I have seen at least 900 - 1000 original Winchester Model 1887s during the past 30+ years, and in all that time, just two of them would grade better than 80%... are you sure that your condition estimate is accurate? A true 80 - 85% condition gun will have strong case colors on all surfaces, brilliant bright case colors in all of the protected areas, the barrel & magazine tube bluing will look almost new (including the bore), and the stocks will be almost like new.

    If possible, please post pictures of your Model 1887.

    Bert when i get it home, i'm out of state working i will send you some pic's so you can tell me,i know you know more about this then i, it is a beautiful gun, it might not have as much case color as you described

    Hey Bert; Why is it so tough to find one of these shotguns in the 80%+ range? I also have looked at several over the years and have yet to see one that I would grade in the high 80s. I did find one the other day that will make a good shooter though(50%).[;)]
    Cartod; I agree with the idea that guns purchased back when were used and not pampered, but my question was why the low survival rate of 1887s vs say 1886s. It does not seem hard to find better examples of 73s or 86s.

    100 years ago people bought guns to use not collect. They were a tool of survival. Folks didn't have safes with dehumidifiers and didn't always clean there guns.

    The answer is really quite simple... shotguns are typically used in much harsher environments and conditions (in and around lakes, ponds, rivers, marshes, etc.), and the number of shots fired through them during a hunting season is significantly higher as well. Lever-action rifles typically only get a couple of sight in shots per year, and maybe several more shots in the course of a hunting season put through them, whereas shotguns can easily have several boxes of shells shot through them annually. In some cases, the only gun owned by a farmer was a shotgun, and it was used to hunt everything that needed some lead injection.

    Additionally, the fact that the last Winchester Model 1887 was made in the year 1898 is also also a consideration. Winchester manufactured the Model 1873 as late as 1923, and the Model 1886 production went into the early 1930s.
