45 ACP

Another dumb question.

When boar hunting is a 45acp of any value as a backup. If I cannot find commercial ammo that is adaquate, I am thinking of trading a for either a 357 or 44 mag revolver.

Even the 357 is a little on the light side?

    yes' i'm looking at a hi-point 45 acp.i know they are not pretty or popular,but are they reliable,any information would be helpful.thanks

    No. Might just slide deep enough into chamber to not fire at all; or might go off, but I wouldn't want to guess where all the gas would go.
    Don't have a .45 Mag., but this is how I read the dimension specs.
    Maybe someone tried it and can give you a more colorful description.
    Having fired a .410 shotshell in an ACP once I'm fully in agreement with those who caution to only fire ammo in a weapon properly chambered to handle it.

    What happened? Well.......
    Let's say it was a good thing I had a set of Pachmayr grips on it and not something like wood or plastic. If I'd been thinking, I'd have removed the magazine; but then, if I'd been thinking, I wouldn't have tried the fool stunt in the first place. (This was roughly 30 years ago. Have gotten A LITTLE smarter since then.) Anywho, the lower rear end of the brass head let go and threw horrendous amounts of gas into the mag well. Stung like a son of a gun, and bowed the grip panels out about 1/4 inch. That's when I learned that the grips have steel inserts. Never tried it again. Reloading would have been a bear anyway; involving, as it did, pulling the slide to gain access to the chamber.

    Put it this way, the .45 Win mag was NOT designed to also take .45 ACP.

    This is NOT one of the few "approved" substitutions.

    Can you get away with this? Maybe. . .maybe not. Could you get it to even fire? I don't know. Assuming you did, would it damage the gun or the shooter? I don't know.

    Personally, I wouldn't try.

    If you've got a gun and want to use it, .45 WIN mag brass is still available from starline for loading (reloading). I think I'd go that route instead.
