powder , ever heard of this ?
Just bought a bunch of reloading supplies from a fella , and ended up with 2 full cans of winchester 230 P
They are in 1lb cans with the yellow WW label on them . It still has the new powder smell to it , was just wondering what it was used for ? rifle ? pistol ?
Also had 2 lbs of win 630 . I found data in one of my older Hornady manuals for 357 mag's & 44 mag's for this powder , but found nothing on the 230 P .

Win 230P was a pistol powder and was replaced by Win 231. I still have a Win loading data sheet fot 230P so if you want the data off of it email me at bratterree@cox.net. 0 -
20gabob, you have mail . 0 -
Sorry but nothing has come thru on my emails. 0 -
I also have some 230P and 630.
W230P is a bit faster than 231, and fouls a bit worse but is usable for most target to mid-level handgun loads.
W630 is a medium-slow handgun powder about like BlueDot in uses. I love it as a 3/4 throttle powder in 45 Colt. THE load for me is a CCI 350 primer 15.0 W630 under a cast 255 SWC or RNFP. It gives 1000 fps with an SD of 6 and is as accurate as it can be held.0 -
My winchester sheet shows for 357mag 158 gr lead 5.6 gr at 1075 fps and for 44 mag 240 gr lead 9.0 gr at 1055 fps and thats all. 0 -
Thank Ya Kindly 20ga , any data for a 158gr lead bullet for 38 special , using win 230 p ?
Also is 9 gr a starting load or a max load for the 44 and a 240gr SWC .
Would like to keep em under 1000 fps0 -
Those were what win would consider max loads so they could be reduced a bit. As for 158gr lead in 38 spec they show 3.7 gr at 855fps. They also show a 148 gr lead wadcutter load at 2.6 gr and 770fps if its of any interest. Hope this helps you out. bob 0 -
For 230-P
This is from the #8 Speer Manual dated JUNE 1970. 38 spl 158swc lead
start 3.7--836fps
MAX 4.3--957fps
WITH CCI 550 MAG PRIMER
This is out of a S&W Model 14 6 inch bbl.
Same powder in a 44Mag with 250 cast swc
start 6.5--887fps
MAX 7.5--992fps With CCI 350 Mag Primer
using a S&W Mdl 29 6.5 inch bbl.0 -
My only comment about that is that Speer had an in-house rule to use magnum primers with any ball power, no matter what. In handgun rounds, that is completely unnecessary, with very few exceptions. 0 -
Thanks a bunch fella's for all the info .
Didn't try any of the 230P powder yet , but I did load some 38's with 158gr SWC and 7.6 gr's of the Win 630 and a CCI550 primer .
Just slightly past 1/2 way going by the Hornady manual , not sure of the copy right date , but if it has data for win 630 , it must be an older one .
The load mentioned above is an accurate & pleasent plinking load ,
Manual states they should be going around 850 fps .
Thanks again for all the input , when I do load some plinkers with the 230P , I'll post back and let ya know how I made out .0
