    Bolt, stock, barrel, trigger etc yes.
    Receiver, NO.
    Here in the US the receiver is considered the firearm (some countries consider the barrel to be the firearm).

    You didn't state what kind of receiver. A bolt yes a upper receiver yes a lower receiver no.

    What about the upper receiver of a FAL? How about most HK firearms? What about Ruger Mark ___ pistol? What about a M1 Thompson?

    Most pistols and AR's are the guns with serial numbered (the firearm) lowers. I would say more guns have parts other then the lower the serial numbered part.

    The key phrase it the serial numbered part of the gun is the firearm. For guns with serial numbered parts the main part that has the action is usually the firearm.

    Plenty of guns serial numbered prior to 1968, it just became a requirement after that.
