Springfield M1A
are these rifles really worth the price? someone mentioned a problem with extracting cases earlier, i have seen this problem on another M1A, but it would easily extract, you just had to do it manually, the rifle was essentially brand new. on anther M1A i saw recently, it looked like the rounds were being fed too "high' they would run into the top of the receiver and hold the bolt open, i think it was factory 175gr or something like that. do these rifles just require alot of fine tuning? or are they very sensitive to ammo? or.....are they just junk?.... i dont think i have any use for a rifle that is that sensitive.

Sorry. The Springfield M1A is the civilan version of the M14 chambered in 7.62x51 (308). It is magazine fed and uses many of the M1 Garand parts. 0 -
Can a gunsmith rechamber it to 30/06? 0 -
i dont think so. the reciever is to short to hold it and the mag wont either. i read an article once where someone rechambered it for some short action mag or another. was ugly looking as hell though. probly cost big bucks too. 0 -
If you want a mag fed .30-06 of that style then you will have to look at the BM-59. 
Not sure what you are actually after price wise. You should easily be able to get a nice Garand for under $1000. An M1A/M14 is going to be closer to $1500. The BM-59 is going to be over $1500 and mags are pricey to come by.

I think the BM59 is a 7.62 only rifle. I have never seen one in 30-06. If you want a mag fed 30-06, you could get a B.A.R. There are Garand conversions made to use detachable magazines but they are 7.62 also. 0 -

As for your quest, the 7.62 mm/.308 WIN is far superior for a modern military style semi-auto than the .30-06 cartridge. When you compare ballistics, they overlap for > 80% of the load range, with the .30-06 offering some additional performance at the top end. (You won't be able to fire the top end loads without damage in any of the rifles we are talking about.)
My recommendation is that you order your CMP service grade M1 rifle NOW; they are cheap, & CMP is nearing the end of the supply. Shoot it a few times, & you will appreciate the soft recoil & handy length of an M14-clone in .308.

friend has a garand reciver that was cut out to accept a bar mag 0
