Mossberg 22 rifle
I have bought an Model 142-A O.F. Mossberg clip feed bolt action rifle.The barrel is marked 22-s-lr. The front of the stock folds down into the vertical position & is made of plastic. It has sling swivels on the left side & a front post site and rear peep site. I can find no serial numbers anywhere on this rifle. Anyone have any ideas on age and value?

I have searched for a couple of days with no luck. I have a Mossberg Model 1 46 B-B and would like at least some history about it. I can't find any serial number, at least not any conventional looking number. The two holes are there for the peep sight but I don't have it, I will be searching that also if it was supposed to be there. It has a pop-up front ring sight and a plain blade type sight on the rear. Does anyone know the dates this rifle was built, where any serial number might be, and if it was a rifle built for target use (peep sight has me wondering about this part)? 0 -
Do you have a 146B or a 46B(b)? Mossberg didn't make a 146B(b). No serial numbers required prior to the GCA of 1968. 0 -
Google Mossberg Collectors Association. I am sure they will give you the information you ask. Also, a membership would cost you only $15 a year. I bought my 146B new in the fall of 1951 so that should give you an idea of the era they were produced. That rear sight is a S130 and I did use my rifle as a target rifle in an NRA affiliated club when I was a teen-ager. (It was/is also a varmint and small game rifle, etc.) However, Mossberg's dedicated target rifle was the model 144. They are great guns! They had no serial numbers since none were required in that era. 0 -

I have the same gun mine is a model 146BA. They were also called model 44 trainers. The gun sells for between 150-200 depending on condition. The gun is super accurate with the peep attachment.. 0 -
The 44 and 146 don't have a lot in common besides being excellent shooters. The 146 wasn't built as a target rifle but is one of the more accurate rifles I own. The S-130 peep sights sell on epay regularly for around $60-$75. The receiver is grooved for standard rimfire rings and for about the same money you can pick up a period-correct Mossberg 4x scope with rings. 0 -

The 144 would be the upgraded 44 or the trainer. While a bunch of features are the same they are not the same gun. A 44 in good condition will bring close to 400 dollars as a shooter as would a 144LS. 146 is just an average mans rifle sold for 40 forty dollars new.0 -
A wealth of information here! Thank you. I took the rifle apart and it, in my opinion anyway, looks very good considering the age. It looks like I should find the peep sight for sure. It is definitely shootable, the barrel rifling and action are rust free. I tried clicking on the www.havlinsales.com link but access was denied so I might have to type in the address manually but wanted to thank all of you first. As far as the Model, my mistake, it is stamped Model 46 B-B. 0 -
