i just picked up a Schuster adjustable gas plug for my m1a. upon trying to install it ive run into a bit of a problem. where as the plug that was on the rifle comes out easily by hand once its loosed up a turn or 2 this new one doesn't want to go in. its fine for about a 1/4 turn but then stops and id need a wrench and a decent amouunt of pressure to get it to keep going. i havent done that yet though as i dont want to risk damaging my rifle. it feels kinda like its cross threading but the threads look the same to me, stock vs new. it says right no the label its for a 1a. do different makers us a different thread pattern? i already sent midway an email asking whats going on with it. anyone got anything to add?

edit: if it makes any difference mine is the loaded model.

    Interested I looked at Schuster's web site, one valve says cleaning drill not included and another valve over bored sounds like modifications that may be required to install both valves. There is no good information on the Schuster's site and they request you email them for technical info and that is what I would do.

    Josh, what ever happened here? I want to get an adjustable gas plug for my M1A and I was searching the forums because I know it's been brought up in the past. I came up with this post and wonder what the resoultion was?

    the problem was it seems that they parkarized (SP) the treads on the adjustable gas plug so that it was a bit of a pain to get it started. what i did is put some wd-40 on the threads of the new plug and get it started in. it would turn maybe 2 times and then get very tight. from there id give it a 1/4 turn and then back it out a little. get it tight again and another 1/4 turn and back it out again. repeated this until it was fully installed. it is pretty tight at first but once you get it installed it gets much easier. just took a little bit of time and a little elbow grease.

    as far as why is it needed? the "weak point" on the m1/m14 rifle design is the op rod. if you shoot hot/heavy loads through these rifles you can bend your op rod. this adjustable plug allows you to regulate the amount of force being applied to the op rod so you can now shoot whatever 308 ammo you choose without damaging the rifle.

    the only down side is the end of the plug is bigger then the factory original so a m14 combo tool wont work any more. also tuning the gas plug for your choice of ammo take a bit of time, and there are no markings or dials on the plug for repeatability. so if you change bullet weights often going back and forth will be a PITA.

    overall im happy with it so far. have only shot maybe 100rds thru the rifle since the swap though. i set it so that shooting regular 145gr ammo freehand the rifle just functions reliably. will have to do more testing with it as time/funds allow.

    Even the original equipment plugs are problematic on the M1. 2 or 3 times over the years mine has managed to work off and fly down range about 20 yards. Sounds like the replacement will stay on better.
