welding?

I have been reading forums that advise against welding on rifle barrels , more especially in the chamber area. How then are the metal blocks that house the extractors on Contender and Encore as well as H&R handi-rifle barrels attached? They look like they have welds on the sides. Is this something that could be a DIY project for?

    Welding is the process of heating the base metal of two or more parts to a molten state to join them together. In heating a small portion to weld on a lug, internal stress & unknown heat-treat areas occur. With the manufacturer, they stress relieve & then heat-treat after the weld process.

    I don't fully understand what you are trying to do. Most small shops don't have the equipment to handle stress relieving & heat-treatment or even the test equipment to tell if it is done right. It's not a simple "back yard" stick & dab weld we're talking about.

    Could you weld a lug blank onto a barrel blank? Yes - - if you have the equipment & skill.

    Can you send the resulting assembly out for stress relief & heat-treating? Yes - - but it won't be cheap!

    Can you finish machine the lug + bore & rifle the barrel blank? Yes - - But here again special machinery & skills are required.

    Would you save anything over a custom barrel from Bullberry or Fox River? NOT BY A COUNTRY MILE!

    There are other methods, such as brazing & soldering, that permit metals to be attached at lower temperatures than welding.

    The lugs on the TC's were done with a electronic beam... not welded..

    "Electronic beam" IS welding.
