Iver Johnson Revolver information.

A friend of mine has inherited a small 5 shot revolver. It is marked Iver Johnson's Arms & Cycle Works, Fitchburg Mass USA on the top of the barrel. It is in blue finish and is a hammer type of revolver. It has a serial number on the bottom of the trigger guard, 176XX. There is patent information on the bottom of the grip frame, June 10 98, Aug 25 04 T16.C4 Pats Pend. The owl heads on the grips look straight out at you, so I believe this is a third model. Am I on the right track? Could anyone tell me when it was made? Is it safe for smokeless powder?

  with out knowing if this revolver has the coil hammer spring i can not tell if it is a third model. the three patent dates you list (the last one is actually 9-6-04) was used between 1907 and 1911. so it could be a third model or a second model. main serial number location is under the grip panel on the left side. this is the location of any letter code prefix to the serial number. what is the letter code? the reason you can not use the grips as an indication of model is grips are replaceable.
