Last shot on Savage model 64 22LR

Picked up a new Savage model 64 with the ten shot magazine. My question is when I am firing it I lose count and end up dry firing it after the last shot. I've done this about 8 times and am wondering if I am ruining the firing pin. Is it possible to put a snap cap in the mag first (will it feed ?) to stop any possible damage.[8]

    Snap caps feed through my Mark III 22/45 but not through the 10-22.

    (I may have that backwards, but I seem to remember the rotary magazine not working. Its been a couple of years.)

    In any event, it shouldn't hurt to give it a try.

    EDIT: I always store my 22lrs with a snap cap in the chamber so the firing pin spring is relaxed. Have never had a problem with them getting stuck in the chamber.

    The Mark III 22/45 is a stacked magazine, and, if memory serves, it does feed the snap caps. There are some that have a step at what would be the projectile, and these did not feed well. Those with a full diameter up to a rounded tip seem to work the best.

    The model 64 mag is a straight 10 shot not a rotary. Looked up reviews for 22 lr snap caps and guys are saying they crack and sometimes break off in the chamber. I wish the bolt would stay open after the last shot like my S&W 22A but you get what you pay for. Thanks for your input.

    Could you load up a dummy round? Take a used case and stick some sort of plastic guide in side to help it feed?

    I guess I'll have to do a little experimenting. Buy some dummy rounds and different snap caps and see what works.

    If the bolt face is recessed for the rim of the 22 to fit into the firing pin will not reach the barrel surface so it will not peen the pin.

    I just checked and the bolt face is recessed. Guess that takes care of that problem. Thanks again everyone!

    for dummy 22's i use a plastic shield for sheet rock stuck in a spent case, they work great and they're inexpensive.
