Who makes an action for 22 Hornet (prefer single shot) that I can screw a barrel on and build a PD gun. Dale

    I would look around for a decent older Winchester 1885 Low Wall. They are about one of the best out there. There is the Ruger #1, and #3 also. If you don't want to mess around with the building part, there are from time to time some newer Winchester Low Walls that are Japanese made on the auction side in 22Hornet, all ready to go.

    Take a look at Martini Cadet actions, strong and classic action for a 22 Hornet. They are fairly easy to find and are cheaper than most other actions.

    Most (if not all) of the quality single-shot actions are not cheap. My personal preference is the Winchester Model 1885, but originals are quite expensive, and I am not an advocate of modifying an original rifle. What I recommend is contacting the Ballard Rifle Company, and see if they will sell you a bare action.

    a winchester 1885 rimfire action can be converted to hornet without much trouble. if you want to go this route let me know.

    I know you want a single shot. But, my thinking when shooting varmints always goes to an accuracy proven platform. So, Savage model 40 Hunter single shot, Thompson Center Contender and CZ 527 are the ones that come to mind for me. I understand Remington 799's are also chambered in .22 Hornet if you can find one around still. Remington sort of screwed up the importation system on those rifles and they (Zastava) are awaiting a new importer to do it right.

    Try www.actioncastings.us the last time I talked to them they were working on a single shot action of approprite size for a hornet. They may have them by now.

    One of my friends bought the CZ 527 in a Hornet recently and loves it. It is not a single shot, but with accuracy like he is getting, I would strongly prefer to have a repeater than a single shot.

    Occasionally you can find Kimber of Oregons in the Hornet, but they are not cheap.

    Occasionally, you can find the Zastava mini-mauser imported by Charles Daly (predecessor to the Rem 799), as Sandwarrior pointed out.

    Thompson Center, perhaps?

    The Savage Model 40 Varmint Hunter Single Shot deserves a serious look.
