6.5x284

Been looking at the Savage and thinking about the F CLass competitions. I shot High power M 14 as a kid. close to twenty years ago. I had read in a magazine that the ammo is hard to find ( this was before everyone was buying everything they could) My question is how hard is it to locate and buy. My understanding is alot of it comes from Norma which is over seas and our gov't has banned importing ammo.

So can you buy it or find it

    Im wondering if theres a certain caliber of rifle to buy that if i switched the barrel to make it a 6.5x284 that the ammunition would fit and work properly in the magazine like in a 700 remington. I guess why im asking is im not sure of the overall lengths, etc. And i would like to have one thats a repeater. doug

    Hello tempdoug---If I understand your question, the easiest would be to rebarrel a rifle (to 6.5 mm) that is currrently a .284. Feeding problems should be nonexistant, or solveable. OR, any short action, that has a 0.473 bolt face (.308, 7-08, .257 rob.,.243) should work, but may require some gunsmithing to get the rounds to feed properly. Good Luck HAWKSHAW

    tempdoug---2---Another thought is if you go to a long action with the .473 bolt face, that will allow you to seat the bullets out farther which is desireable in the 6.5 cal's. HAWKSHAW

    Welcome to the Gunbroker Forums!

    The case for the 6.5/284 Norma or Winchester is a unique case with the parent being the .284 Win. The only other cartridges are derivatives of that case and there are no other cartridges available to make the .284 Win. The 7.5 Swiss is close but not really an exact match although they have been interchanged by some folks.

    So, in answer to the question, the only rifles ready for a rebarrel would one chambered for the .284 Win. or Norma or the 6.5/284 such as the Savage.

    The difference between the Winchester chamber and the Norma chamber is the length of the throat with the Norma chamber being the longer one so that the long range VLD bullets can be seated out to increase the case capacity. This brings into play the length of the actions since the .284 Win. was chambered in short actions and the 6.5/284 Norma has to be magazine fed through a long action or Detachable Magazines with an increased length. These DMs are not the standard factory magazines like Remington but the custom ones from AI, Badger Ordnance or a couple of others. These are usually used in conjunction with a custom action although the Remington can be modified.

    Hello, and welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.

    Like has been mentioned, the 284 Winchester is the parent cartridge you are looking for. However, the standard chambered rifle/magazine for this round is short throated, and usually the magazine length matches the throat. There is a solution to your problem, other than going with the long action, and modifying the feed rails, and magazine follower, when changing the barrel. That solution is called the 260 Remington. It gives up very little in performance to the 6.5/284, especially if you are planning on a barrel of less than 28 inches in length. It is also easier on the throat of the rifle, as I understand it, the benchrest shooters are looking at the standard 284, and 7mm RSAUM, and 7mm WSM's, which they say are easieer on the throats.

    I used an intermediate length action Mauser 98, like the Yugo 24/47, to build one a few years back. It worked out real well. I've been sorry that I let a buddy of mine talk me out of it. Oh well...

    My 6mm-.284 is on a VZ-24 (M/K98 made in Czech Republic). It was simply a neck down job of 6.5-284 brass, so the case is pretty much identical. It feeds four through the action instead of five. If there was any massaging of the feed-rails it was done before I bought it. Apparently it can be done well as it feeds just fine.

    I believe that Accuflite in Pennsylvania makes his customer 6.5x284 using 30-06 Sakos. I don't think he had to modify the standard Sako magazine to use the 6.5x284.

    Like you, I am looking to make my own 6.5x284 as custom rifles (like Accuflites) are out of my price range.
