    jaws55...interesting question. If your #4, Mk1 is a low four or five digit serial #, what you might have is one of the early production rifles. If your serial # is between 1000-9999 AS would indicate production at BSA-Shirley (outside Birmingham). If the # is between 10000-19999 AS would indicate production at ROF-Maltby (near Sheffield). The Brits did this so rifles would not have duplicate serial #'s. Later production at other factories started incorporating letters within digits, "L" for Long Branch and "C" for Savage, and so on. But what bothers me is the 43 date, indicating that this is not an early (1941) rifle. Are there any other marks on the rifle? If so, that might help solve the problem! Better yet, good photos would help. Anyway, my educated guess! Good shooting!
