Win 100

I have a Win model 100 , sn 183363. I would like to remove the action from the stock so that I could give it a good cleaning and refinish the stock. Could someone help me with the proper procedure of removing the stock ? Thanks in advance , Gene

    I was going to give take-down instuctions but if you have never done this I'll suggest taking it to your local gunsmith. he will also check to see if the firing pin has been replaced (there is an on-going recall on teh old style firing pins).

    Make sure your gunsmith knows what he is doing. Taking these guns down is not straightforward. It is very easy to damage the stock. Many of these guns have not had the firing pin modification done and it can be quite dangerous if it fails.

    Really basic information, from memory:

    There are 2 screws that holds the metal to the wood - one through the trigger group and one through the forward swivel. Also, the bolt has to be held back to release the stock because the action bars fit inside recesses in the stock (like the Ruger .44 carbine).

    The only lock back for the action is a M100 magazine. Or you can use 3 hands (one to hold back the bolt, one to grip the barrel to pivot it up and out of the stock, and one to hold the wood).

    KJACK , Thanks for your help , I wasn't sure about the bolt and I was having trouble with the 3 hand thing. Will try again this weekend.

    u can try a gun vise if you have one, clamp just the stok in the vise be sure to use a thick old terry cloth towel on the clamping portion of the vise, hold the bolt back with your right hand and hold the barrel with your right and gently pull up and out, you may have to slightly wiggle side to side as you pull
    had one of those once and that was the way i did it

    You have been given the basics. These rifles MUST be disassembled and cleaned- the gas system fouls, and will lock the action closed. If you cannot draw the bolt back, you can't take it out of the stock. Winchester has an owner's manual available- you WILL need that. Do check and see if the firing pin recall has been done to your rifle. Very dangerous (unexpected full auto possible) if not done. DO NOT LOSE THE TINY HALF MOON CLIP for the gas piston cap. You will play merry hell trying to find another.
