Comp regs re thumb hole stocks?
Greetings:
I've been looking at several .22s for possible beginner small bore competition. One of the guns I'm looking at has a thumb hole stock, but was informed that many competitions don't allow this type of stock. I'd hate to buy one only to discover that I can't use it for competition. What's the skinny on this?

What type of competion, check their web site and read the regs. Cause some may not like the stock and some may not mind hard to know if we do not know what you are planing to do. 0 -

Just basic local stuff. I'm not versed on all the groups out there doing comps. It's just that I went to a couple dealers this past weekend and got differing stories on thumb holes being/not being allowed. I sent an e-mail to the NRA person in charge of their small bore stuff but haven't heard anything back. I'm just snooping around at this point anyway. I may just get the Savage Mark II BTV (thumb hole) anyway, as it's relatively inexpensive and it sure feels good in hand!0 -

If shooting local then find where you're shooting and who the contact person is and give them a jingle. If they don't know they will get back to you and tell you.
I don't compete on a national or regional basis but I've haven't heard that thumbhole stocks have been outlawed. I don't see them as common equipment though so they may not be what the envisioner intended for them. I used to like them a lot. Now, I find they hamper small adjustments I may need to make.

If you don't get a reply and you can find a match, just go as an observer. I started PPC that way. Typically, the competetors welcome newbies and are extremely helpful. I had guys offering to loan me gear and explaining rules on my first trip. 0 -
Thanks for the pointers, everyone. I've been checking out a few local events, and found out they even have an Appleseed event in the Bay Area. That sounds like something I'd like to try.
Oh, and I'm close to settling on either the Savage Mark II BTV RJ or the BTVS.0 -

The BTV/BTVS have a comb more suited to scope use than irons... and the FV/F series has a stock more suited to using irons... All the same actions and barrels though. Very accurate for the $ you spend... my Mk II BTV gave me an honest 2" group for 25 rounds at 100 yards...0
