Identification of Browning shotgun
Hi Guys. I just acquired a Browning shotgun, 12 gauge, inscribed "Light Twelve" on the receiver,with a serial number of 73831 and I'm havung trouble finding out what model it is,when it was made and other information. Can anyone help? I've tried the Browning website. It is a semi-auto. The barrel says Browning Arms Co., St. Louis, Mo on one side. On the other side of the barrel it says Made In Belgium.

Your shotgun is what is known as an Auto 5. The earlier ones were what is now described as Standard Weight. Later they began producing the Light 12, Sweet Sixteen and Light Twenty. The light weight versions are in greater demand than the standard weight. Belgium made Brownings are more collectable than the Japanese made ones. There were many of the Auto 5's produced. Value would depend on the amount of original finish and modification or damage to the shotgun. Non factory recoil pads, poly chokes or shortened stocks will all reduce the value. To best determine value, do a search of completed auctions on gunbroker.com. Use the "smart search" feature and search for Browning Light Twelve. It should give you descriptions of similar guns that have been sold. What someone bids or actually pays for a similar, gun on the auction is a very good appraisal. Thanks Hershel for the info on my Browning shotgun. Since posting I went again to the Browning website and I think I have identified when it was made. When I looked before I read only the serial number 73xxx and didn't see the "G" seperate and above the number, so according to the browning website it was made in 1957. I traded a very nice Winchester 1200 with the choke tubes + some cash for it. I think I came out ok. Thanks again for your response. 0 -
Any time you can get rid of a 1200 you made a good trade. 0
