Engraved Colt Thoughts? I.D. the engraver?

Here is an old Colt I have. I'm just wondering if Pauline or anyone might be able to ID the engraver. I know it's redone, but it's a pretty little thing! Short of getting a letter from Colt, is there a way to find out if it's factory?

    Does Colt offer a "yellow sheet" like winchester? It would let you know if it letters without having to pay the full price of the actual letter.

    I am not an expert on Colt engraving but I've seen quite a bit of engraving that has come out of their Custom Shop. This does not look like anything that would have come out of there. The engraving is much more simplistic than what their engravers usually did.

    I'm sure that's not factory engraving. Also, Colt would never restamp "45 Colt" like that.

    I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to engraved guns, but I'm confident that your Single Action was not engraved at the factory and it wasn't refinished at the factory either. The engraving was applied after the gun was buffed in preparation for refinishing. The barrel chambering stamp has been poorly re-stamped using individual letters and numbers, not the factory roll stamp; you can tell because the characters are not aligned or in a straight line. The butt serial number was also re-stamped at the time the gun was buffed and refinished, probably to keep the serial number readable.

    The stamp on the right rear triggerguard bow is kind of interesting! It is where the typical factory rework mark would be, but it isn't the rework asterisk "*", star, or ampersand "&". That might be the mark of the engraver who did the work, but probably will remain unknown since there are/were many people doing aftermarket engraving. The engraving isn't unattractive, just not Colt Factory or one of their contract engravers; that I'm pretty sure of.

    Kind of an interesting gun.

    I agree with others not Colt factory engraving . However I must commend you on the quality of your pictures .It takes photographic skills to take pictures like yours of Nickel Plated pistols . GOOD JOB

    it's a Colt, but not Colt engraving, being refinished, nickel plating and a poorly "Colt 45" stamped on the barrel has reduced it's value to nearly nothing, i'll be generous here and offer you $150.00 if you would like to dump it on some poor unknowing sucker[;)][:D]
