45/120 rifle recoil

    I have never shot one but you can reproduce these recoils in a muzle loader. Put the same weight bullet on top of 120 grains of black powder and shoot it. If you can find a .45 cal ML to do this with it would be closer than a .50 cal but shouldn't really be that much difference.

    Not a perfect test but it should give you aa idea of what to expect. Of course you must use a ML rated to handle 120gr of black powder. Stock configurations, hold, recoil pad (if any) all make a diference as well.

    But if you have a ML or know someone who does doing what I suggested will give you an idea of whatr to expect.

    In my experience it wouldn't be to bad but 120gr of black powder isn't for the recoil sensitive either. A lot of modern Ml use more powder than 120gr.

    If you can handle blackpowder 45-70-500 loads, then you should be able to handle the 'extra' loading. Especially in a 13lb. rifle. Recoil is subjective. My take won't be your take. Have to experience it for yourself.

    If you have been shooting 45-70-405 Remington factory loads, all bets are off. The Remington loading is anaemic.

    Wouldn't finding the ME of the 45/120 load and shooting a modern cartridge with the same ME be comparable?

    Yes, and no. While the recoil energy may be the same, the recoil velocity won't be, and it's the RV that that causes a lot of the pain (push vs punch). That's not getting into the rifle weight and stock fit issues.

    Bullet W x bullet V + Powder W x Powder V = recoil energy.
    Recoil energy / rifle W = rifle V

    Well i've fired a cap and ball TC hawkins .50 loaded with 120 grains of black powder a few times.. Its like shooting a high brass 2 3/4" shell through a light shotgun.. A .45 cased round would be a bit more punishing then that I'd imagine...

    In all actuallity, percieved recoil is a function of momentum, not energy. Energy is the following equation, which is favored by velocity

    Energy=mass(bullet weight)x velocity x velocity

    momentum is simple, leave out one of the velocity's

    momentum=mass x velocity

    Mass is in pounds, where 7000grains = 1 pound.

    That said, the 45-120 is loaded to no higher pressures than the 45-70, and the majority of today's 45-70's are loaded to pressure that is acceptable of the old trap doors. You will be very capable of tolerating the 45-120 recoil, as it will be virtually the same as the 45-70.

    hookman.....I shoot an old Remington Hepburn in 45.2-7/8th Sharps (45-110) with 105 grains of 1F and either a 570 grain grooved lead bullet or a 550 grain paper-patched bullet out of an old Lyman-Ideal mold. The rifle has a 30" #4 weight barrel. Shot 15 shots from the bench one weekend and spent the next 6 months shooting 22's while the shoulder healed. I also shoot an old Marlin-Ballard in 45 Govt (45-70) with a 500 grain bullet from an old Winchester mold and have never had a problem. The heavier weight bullet and the 60% extra powder takes it toll.

    I still shoot the rifle, but never from the bench, gotta have room to "move". :)

    There was a reason the old buffalo hunters bought the heavier rifles.....have fun.
