discoloration

I'm looking at buying a Taurus 357 revolver it is a used gun and around the hammer there is some black discoloration was wondering if this is normal or if it was water damage or what? Any help would be appreciated

  If it were water it would be rust or patina. Do you have any pic's. How old is it.
