Weatherby Imperial Scope Problem

I bought a nice vintage Weatherby Imperial scope 4x81 to mount on my Weatherby XXII bolt action rifle. I used Weaver tip-off rings. The problem is that I ran out of both windage and elevation adjustments before I could get the scope zeroed at 25yards. I have tried shims and repositioning the rings but cannot get closer than 3 inches to my point of aim. Any suggestions? I am about ready to give up and mount it on an old Weatherby Vanguard that has an adjustable base. Thanks for any suggestions.

    Use a bore sighter or if you have a good eye look down the bore with a empty case primer removed and physically center the scope with the adjustments set at mid point. If you can not even come close try a leupold bar mount. This mount has a front locking cam and the rear has lots of left/right adjustment. You must use matching bar mount rings. It has a full length bar that bridges the receiver, one piece not two piece bases. Make sure you have nothing in the stock making lateral contact with the barrel. This will throw the round way left/right.

    As jaeger said, ,,,but I would get rid of the rings also....just my opinion on those and start fresh with a one piece base.Good luck

    I would use Burris Signature rings, you can get shimming inserts for those, and they eliminate the need for laping.

    Don't know if Leopold makes the type of mount suggested for a groove top .22. Weaver does make a full length mount that attaches to the grooved receiver and accepts the standard Weaver or similar style rings.
    Brownells also sells some nice steel rings (Redfield or Leopold, I don't recall) that look like their standard "big gun rings" on top, but clamp into the receiver groove. Good luck.
    p.s. "Empty case, primer removed" might be hard with your rifle.[:D][:D][:D]

    Did you center the cross hairs to start? If not do that first. Toss the Weaver rings, try Burris and bore sight.

    Thanks for the replies and suggestions. This afternoon I got the scope out again. I gave up on using the Imperial scope on the Weatherby XXII and mounted it instead on a nice early Weatherby Vanguard in 300 Win Mag. As suggested, I used a Leupold one piece adjustable base and rings I already had on the centerfire rifle. Then I centered the crosshairs in the scope's field of view and boresighted making windage adjustments with the bases rear screws. Finally I sighted in at 25 yards. At 100 yards it was about 2 inches high, just what I want. I put an old Redfield 4x on the XXII and it had enough adjustments to sight it in at 40 yards. Thanks again!
