US Springfield Model 1903

We have a Model 1903 Springfield Bolt Action 30/06 and we are looking for any helpful information regarding age or value. It was given to me by my father. Only information I have is the serial no. 1341665. On the top of the barrel by the front site there are two letters SA and then there is a symbol which looks like an exploding bomb. Under that there is 1-30. Alongside of the safety there is an off and on switch. I have no idea how this works. If you have the safety, why would you need the off/on switch? I will send some pictures along later. Thanks for any information you can give me.

    Your rifle was manufactured in 1930, which matches the barrel date. The "SA" stands for Springfield Armory. The "on off" switch engages and disengages the safety magazine.

    Pictures are necessary for any further information.

    I meant to add that the exploding bomb is the US government ordnance stamping.

    It's hard to tell from your pictures but it looks like it may have been refinished. Closeups would help, particularly of all markings. Still, it's a nice classic US military rifle and a wonderful gift from your dad.

    The on-off switch is to block the magazine. The safety is on the back of the bolt.

    The intent of the cut off was so you could load the magazine and then turn the cut off Now you can load a round from the top and use the rifle as a single shot until you need rapid fire then turn the cut off to load a round from the magazines. The old cogger's of the day though the G.I. would waste too much ammo if they could always use the ammo in the magazine . Some things never change with the military they had the same way of thinking in 1876 with the Trapdoor when there were some Indians that had repeater rifles and Bows that could shoot faster then the trap door we all know how that turned out [xx(][xx(][xx(]

    Another purpose of the cutoff switch is to allow removal of the bolt from the receiver. Put the cutoff in the center position and the bolt can be pulled out the back of the receiver.
