Hi I'm going to try the us practical shooting and I need a pistol. I want one that is suitable for the event and yet shootable for my 14 year old son. I'd like brand and caliber suggestions please?

    A Glock 22 would be a great starter pistol, you could shoot it in Limited, Limited 10 or production. Mags/accessories are cheap and the guns work right out of the box.

    If you want to start with a single action, a Para Ordnance P16-40(not LDA) would be your cheapest starter gun. This would be for Limeted or L10. More money than a Glock, but still a working mans gun.

    If money is no object STI or SV.

    40 S&W is the only choice as far as I am concerned if you are serious. If you just want to shoot production(10 round mags, double action first shot), and don't reload 9mm would do.

    A 1911 in 45acp. would be a good start. The recoil is less than a 40S&W. My son started shooting one when he was 13. If recoil is too much, start with a 9mm. When you get serious you can always change to a major caliber. The 45 makes it from the start.
    You can shoot USPSA or IDPA with either. IDPA is less expencive to get started in.

    Maybe 20 years ago. No one doing anything beside screwing around runs a 45 any more.

    www.USPSA.org there is a section with info for new shooters. Start up costs can be as little or much as you want.
