stevens 620 info-- knowledge needed
first off, this is my first post, so hi everyone. anyway, i recently picked up a stevens 620 in 20 guage. i didnt know a whole lot about the gun prior to purchase other than it isn't the typical collector shotgun, but i liked it and wanted to help the gun find a home.
my question is this, it doesn't have a serial number, but does have some distinctive stamping on it. i was hoping that someone could tell me, possibly the age(i know its between '26 and '45), and what the stamps mean.
there are three spots for the stamps. the barrel, the bottom of the reciever, and the back of the reciever(only visible when you remove the stock). three stamps show up at all three places. a circled "V", a circled "N", and a P. in addition, the barrel also has a circled "SP", and the bottom of the reciever has a circled "22F" and what appears to be an asterisk or something of the sort right next to the circled "V".
any help is appreciated decoding these hyroglyphics. also, the barrel is about 27". any idea if it would be full, mod, no choke, etc? thanks, jim

WELL THE 'SP' STANDS FOR "SAVAGE PROOF", THE OTHER LETTERS ARE JUST INSPECTION STAMPS. SER. #'S WERE NOT REQUIRED BEFORE 1967 AND YOUR SHOTGUN NEVER HAD ONE. AS TO THE CHOKE, TRY THE 'DIME' TEST, IF A DIME WILL NOT ENTER THE MUZZEL IT IS A FULL CHOKE. IF IT DOES, IT'S EITHER MOD. OR I.C.
""Dime" test will not work on a 20 ga.".......oops, I missed that[B)]0 -
good info. i realize that serial no's weren't needed during these years, but the reason i bring the question up is that some guns of this model have serial numbers. not sure why some do and some don't. 0 -
