Winchester 1906 Confusion
This was my grandfather's Winchester 1906:
Serial number is 31485, which, I think places its year of manufacture in 1906. Both the tang and the breech numbers match.
However, the barrel carries the 1911 patent date and is chambered for all three modern .22 caliber rounds.
Is this a gunsmith change or would the factory have done this? Or am I completely confused about the year that this rifle was made?
BTW, I've got dad's rifle, too!

Model 1906 serial number went through the Polishing Room in July of 1906. It was most likely assembled into a completed rifle within a month or so of that date. You can verify exactly when it was received in the warehouse from the assembly room by contacting the Cody Firearms Musuem and purchasing a factory letter.
I suspect that the barrel and cartridge carrier were swapped out at a much later date, but it is possible that it was originally assembled much later than the serial number would suggest. The factory letter will help clear up the mystery.0 -
