    Thinking about getting a 1911 in .38 Super. How does it compare ballistically with the .357 mag? Good personal defense round?[?]

    Hello Moe I am glad to see that at least one 1911 Pistol Maker is starting to put more then one spring in their pistol shipping box. I will try to make this as short as possible but still give you an idea what to look for . If the spring installed for the load you are shooting is too weak it will cause damage to the pistol during prolonged shooting . if the spring is too strong then it will give failures to function problems . on top of this it depends greatly on how the shooter grips the pistol. A Short stocky weight lifter can get a pistol to function a pistol with a very heavy spring and light load while at the same time a petite young lady can not . The best way to test for a spring being too heavy/strong is load one round and fire it as normal .If the slide does not lock back the spring is too strong . There is no quick easy way to tell if the spring is too weak. I would shoot the pistol with the strongest spring that will allow 100 % function . The 38 super is a cartridge that can vary greatly in power / recoil impulse. Hope this helps. most likely spring installed in pistol was 16 or 18 pound Try to mark light /med /heavy so you don't get them mixed up.

    My Taurus 1911 38 Super came with an 18 lb spring, and eats everything, even my light NRA target loads of 4.2grs of Bullseye and a 115gr bullet.
