'Supported Chamber'
Hello Forum,
I'm looking at some 10mm ammo for use in my GLOCK G20. There is a warning statement on the box which reads, "Use only in fully supported chambers"... so what does this mean AND is my G20 equipped with a fully supported chamber?

All semi auto pistols have a feed ramp for the transition between cartridges from the Magazine to the barrel chamber This feed ramp takes some of the support away from the bottom of the cartridge . The grip angle and other design features of the Glock brand of pistols Have a Larger unsupported chamber then many other pistols . On top of that the 40 S&W is loaded to higher pressure then many other large bore semi auto pistols . Because of these to interacting designs High powered 40 S&W ammo have had KA-BOOMS in Glock pistols. YMMV 0 -

I think the only fully supported glock barrel is the 357 sig.

Thanks for the good info. Will a replacement barrel from Lone Wolf or EFK be benificial? I don't want any Kb issues and really want to get the G20 ready for unrelenting performance.

I have had good luck with LW. I have the mod 33 with a LW 40 barrel, runs great and no leading.
But I have notice the glock factory barrels to tend to lead faster[:)][:)]0 -
I hesitate to state my opinion on if a replacement barrel will have better chamber support after seeing 2 40 S&W Glock KABOOMS I want nothing to do with them. I may be too harsh and too quick to judge. but I will let others advise you on replacement barrels. I feel it is a design problem of the gun not the barrel but I don't want to be the crash test dummy to find out. 0 -
To determine if you have an unsupported chamber,measure from the forward end of the chamber to the forward extent of the feed ramp. This will take careful estimating.
Next measure depth of a case.
If case depth exceeds the above measurement, you have an unsupported chamber.0 -
easy and most accurate to tell if the gun has an unsupported chamber.
using a hacksaw- section the appropriate empty case lengthwise and you will see the heavy section of brass with a flash hole for the primer- this is called the web. insert the case fully into the chamber and observe that the web is at least to the feed ramp cutout.
This would be called a fully supported chamber. Glocks seem to be always mentioned in this scenerio but the sig 220 in 45 acp is the most unsupported chamber that I've seen.. In fact at the rear of the chamber on a sample 220 barrel here measures about .495 diameter.(saami 45acp case is .468-.470 case head diameter) I know- I know- 45acp is called a "low pressure round".. and fully supported case is not necessary- ok- so why do all the colt 1911's from 1911 on- ALL have fully supported chambers?????????? And Hornady Mfg says "we do not recommend reloading ANY case that will be used in an unsupported chamber"....0 -

That is because you should not shoot lead thought a Polygonal cut rifled gun. The polygonal rifling grips the bullet in a different way that can cause excessive leading leading to increased pressures.

I know it smears the lead instead of cutting it, I have aftermarket barrel for all my glocks.0
