barrel manufacturing

We are looking at making a 70 cal. smooth bore gun barrel. We will be using a sabot with a 50 cal. projectile with a velocity of about 2000 ft/s. The length of the barrel will be around 2ft. Short range target. The materials being considered are Ordinance steel and 4140 steel.

1) Anyone have any suggestions on either material or others?

2) Any suggestion on wall thickness?

  Have you thought about starting with a shotgun barrel? 12ga is .72 IIRC ...

  When you say Ordnance steel where are you getting it and what SAE or AISI number are you considering?
  There is 4140 and 4140. If you are going to make a barrel get Aircraft
  Grade tubing or gun barrel quality.
  It should be D.O.M. and not welded.
  You may want to sleeve it externally for a foot or so from the breech.
