1876 win. 45-60 with 30 inch barrel.
my 1876 win. in 45-60 serial number is 35903 has a 30 inch barrel and is in very good con.(i shoot it from time to time). a man has offered me quite a sum for the rifle, but thats not the qustion. in midas,s book he states that 1 in 1200 had longer than 28 inch barrels and as they made 63-64 thousand is it right that they only made 50-60 rifles with barrels over 28 inches?, i don,t think i,m going to sell it,i would just like to know. eastbank.

I'm sure Bert will be along to give you the exact numbers but rest assured, you WILL PROBABLY NOT see another 30" 1876 in your lifetime. When you consider that only about 10% of true antique firearms have survived, and the extremely small number of 30" guns to begin with, you have a pretty rare specimen. [:D]

It is not true that Winchester only made 50-60 extra long barrels for the model 1876, and Madis' "1 in 1200" number is totally bogus. I do not know what the exact number is, but based on what I have seen in the warehouse ledgers, the number is likely to be very close to 1,000 extra long barrels were made, most of which were 30-inch. I have seen three of them with factory 36-inch barrels (two are owned by the same collector). 0 -
thanks bert, i still feel good about the numbers,and it is good to know what they realy are. i wonder how many people were sucked in by the midas books? i think the offer the man made was because of what he read in midas,he was baseing his offer on the 1 in 1200 made with the longer barrels and it was a very good offer, he has called me several times to buy the rifle. eastbank. 0 -
You are quite welcome. A lot of people unknowingly quote the "rarity" numbers found in Madis' books like they are the absolute gospel... my research has positively proven otherwise for each model that I have conducted detailed research. 0
