What size flint works in this lock?

    Muskets use Musket size flints. Try Dixie Gun Works, that's where I use to get them.

    A back action Flintlock? What a mess of a gun. I'd be surprised if any flint worked well(or at all for that matter)in that lock. The geometry is all wrong. By the looks of it, it smashes the flint into the frizzen rather than scraping down it.

    +1 I also doubt that the frizzen was even case hardened so a strong spark is doubtful. I think it was more a tourist trade gun made to hang on the wall and let the owner fabricate tall tales of its Revolutionary War history!

    Fix it? Just cut it up into little bits that will fit in your garbage can.


    There is so much wrong, I don't know where to start. The lock is an inherent design flaw. No way to fix it that would be cost effective.

    As for the rest of the gun, You just can't fix ugly.

    Granted it's NOT the best designed system, to determine the size of the flint you need, set the lock in the half cock position and determine what size flint will fit in the jaws with a small piece of leather or sheet lead wrapped around it, and be just a whisker away from the frizzen in it's closed position.
    Your photo shows it in the fired position; pull the hammer back one notch and close the frizzen. I knew a couple of re-enactors who used that model and it WILL fire, though it is NOT the greatest quality.

    when I go half cock and push the frizzen close, the tip of the top flint clamp touches the frizzen face and the frizzen will not close all the way.
