1884 Win Fact Engraved - Quest. for Pauline

I meant to post this under your thread but screwed up. This 1894 has been well used and enjoyed but I was wondering if you can see enough of the engraving detail to identify the Winchester engraver. As you can see in the Cody letter (last pics) that it is $4.00 engraving and received in the warehouse March 5, 1904.
Any help is most appreciated.

    Looks like you got your $4.00 worth...[:D] That is some fine looking engraving and I will hold my opinion. Is this a gun that is hunted with now? I am sure Pauline/Bert will be along soon to try and help out.

    Thanks Cartod. The previous owner killed bear and deer with it not very long ago. Its not hunted with any longer....my luck would be to slide down a rocky ledge with it! I have shot it and it still groups just fine.

    John Ulrich engraved that rifle. It was the 225th Model 1894 that was factory engraved. Of interest, serial 211217 was also engraved.

    Thanks Bert, I suspected and was hoping that John L. Ulrich was the engraver. It sure would be nice to pair it up with #211217, that would be a great pair!

    Your gun was engraved by an Ulrich. It could have been done by either John or Herman Leslie Ulrich. It would be very hard to tell which one for sure. On certain engraving patterns their work is virtually indistinguishable.

    Pauline, thanks very much for the info. Did they sign their work on a gun? If so, where would it normally be found? I have examined this gun but so far have not been able to find anything indicating a signature.

    As far as I am aware, there are no known examples of a gun signed by Herman Leslie Ulrich. This is not unusual as most of the factory engraved guns were not signed. John Ulrich signatures are more prevalent. This could be due to the fact that he engraved many Winchesters free lance. Most were signed J.Ulrich, some by a stamp, others hand engraved. In fewer cases he would sign JU. His signature can be found on the receiver, the upper or lower tang, and in some cases on the tang behind the stock. You would have to remove stock to check.
