    regarding the pre 64 Winchester 70 featherweight, what's the most desireable collectable caliber, 30-06, 308. or 243

    Yes. In addition to the Winchester Pad they offered the White Line and several other pads as options for a minimal extra charge. The magnums came standard with the Winchester pad but Pachmayr could be substituted. The.264 came late and had a vented pad.

    My 1961 M70 in .264 has the standard plastic butt plate with the slight curve typical of other late pre-64 Winchester 70's.

    You are right. The standard .264 Westerner rifle did not have a pad. The .264 Featherweight had a pad unless ordered without. They switched from steel buttplates to composite around 1959 before the .264 was introduced in 1960. thanks.
