Is this rifle a cheap Slavic Mauser with a laminated stock?

The Remington M798 is manufactured by Zastava in Serbia. This is the same barreled action that was distributed by Charles Daly and Interarms. Before Remington, Daly, and Interarms, these were imported by Herter's.
A quote from Jon R. Sundra (Rifle Shooter magazine):
"The 798 is a pure 1898 Mauser, meaning that the bolt body, receiver and bottom-metal unit are literally interchangeable with those of a military Mauser. Just to reassure myself, I took a military bolt from a 1909 Argentine Mauser, and it fit the 798 receiver like it belonged there; ditto for the 798's bolt in the Argentine."

However, after many thousands of us harangued Remington about their obvious stupid stocking mistake, they tried to make a comeback with this:
The comeback was short lived because Remington didn't grasp the backlash from the general public regarding the incredible high prices compared to the affordable price when Charles Daly was the distributor. Remington succumbed to the onslaught of bad press and lack of sales by discontinuing the whole line. This was just one more failure brought on by bad management decisions and a stupid marketing department.

That is quite a nice rifle, and the prices have been very reasonable. I would strongly prefer the walnut stock to the wood laminated one, but that is personal preference.
As Nononsense stated above, it is a very good action. I like the safety, and the trigger is quite good. I know nothing about the quality of the barrel, whether it is free-floated or not, and whether it is bedded well or not.
The Mausers have been extremely popular as dangerous game rifles, because, if your target charges you, and you are shooting, running, jumping, and crawling on the ground to avoid having the animal gore you, stomp you, eat you, or otherwise, the controlled feed action may just save your life!!0 -
I have a 798 in .30-06. I will say this. It is a Mauser action, controlled round feed, etc. Free floated barrel. Quality is so-so. I mean it works fine and looks good, but action is rough. Now, I'm not a rifle expert, and I still expect it to break in. I only have about 120 rounds through it. Mine has an imperfection in that the stock gap on the barrel is not the same on each side. Minor maybe, but still, it is noticeable. In my 120 rounds, I got some very good 3 shot groups under an inch at 100 yds with factory ammo. 0
