I need advise on a colt Ar
I'm looking at buying this gun. I was told it is 1 0f 1000 made in 1996-97. It came with Hoge front and hand grips, Chote stock, 20in bull barrel, and a special triger and fireing pin. I can pick it up for a grand. Any advise would be helpful. Thanks [?] [?]

The AR's 'odometer' is in its boltface. Can you post a tight, closeup shot of the front of the bolt? Thanks, Joe

I believe that the old list price on the Tactical Elite was around $1795 so $1000 is a good buy if the rifle is in nice shape. The rifle came with a scope, but it was nothing great (I think it was a Tasco of some sort or another) so not having the optics included is no great loss. 0 -
The upper is Colt, make sure the Barrel is a Colt. There should be some markings on it in front of the gas block. Should be marked C MP caliber twist rate. 0 -

1 of 1000 is a marketing phrase. Meant to catch "collectors" who think special versions of this rifle are going to go up in price. Right now you can buy that kind of quality BRAND NEW for a grand...or less. The hogue grips don't mean much. There's a dozen aftermarket manufacturers that do as good or better. What special firing pin? What special trigger. If you have a name like McCormick, Geisle, RRA single stage match, then you have some value. But 'Special' doesn't cut it. How does it work is the most important factor. Do you strain in any way to pull it? Does it have a lot of creep? The 20" bull barrel (stainless?) adds a little value but not that much. There are a lot of them out there. And Colt doesn't make the best barrels out there. Their barrels usually get pulled in favor of a barrel that does shoot. Do a little research on barrel makers and you'll see who's barrels are the choice.
My bottom line here is right now, and probably not for a long time are AR15/M16 rifles going to be collectable. If you look at a special rifle, that someone has endorsed, and it costs more, it's because that person has a reputation using it and had it spec'd out to the best components he could get for the jobs he did.
Personally, the name Colt doesn't carry a whole lot of weight with me. It's a strong brand name that is good for resale. Let someone else pay the big bucks for a name. If you drop big bucks make sure it's a quality piece.0
