Fluted VS Non Fluted
I have never owned a large cal Pistol. What is the advantage or disadvantage of having A Non Fluted cylinder say in 44 mag or 460? Thanks.

Technically stronger on the unfluted, but IMHO it's a matter of esthetics. Personally I never cared for the unfluted look, though it didn't really bother me on my SBH. 0 -
non-fluted will be a heavier, if not stronger cylinder, and therefore in a comparably sized firearm, felt recoil will be lower. 0 -
Well, in fact, there is no difference in strength between fluted and non fluted revolver cylinders because the fluting only removes metal from the thickest part of the cylinder wall.
The weakest part of the cylinder (ie where it will break or rupture) is at the thinnest part of the cylinder wall. In most revolvers, that point is where the outer rim of the cartridge chamber lies, and its exactly the same thickness in fluted and non-fluted cylinders.
Non-fluted cylinders give you two advantages:
a. They increase WEIGHT. In a magnum pistol that can be helpful to reduce muzzle flip and recoil.
b. Appearance (the unfluted cylinders are usually associated with BIG wheelguns).
They also give you two DISadvantages:
a. They increase WEIGHT.
