Nightforce scope
Has anyone used a Nightforce scope 5.5-22x50 with the NP-1RR reticule on Prairie Dogs? If you have how did you like it's rangefinding capabilties on Prairie Dogs?

While I have not had any experience with the NP-1RR reticle, I have had exposure to the NP-R1. I currently own two of the NXS 5.5-22x56 NightForce scopes with that reticle.
Like all reticles used for rangefinding, including the mil-dot reticles, the principle is based on known target size. I use mine for deer hunting mostly, and deer like prarie dogs come in various sizes. The reticles that have clutter in them with ranging circles, are all based on the AVERAGE size of the target, and doesnt take into account that that prarie dog is only 7 inches tall at 600 yards because he is slumping over eating, instead of 10 inches standing errect. Same as an average deer being 18 inches brisket to back, wheere a big Northern buck might be in the 24 inch range. So basically while the principle in theory works, in the real world it almost works. For myself, I prefer an uncluttered scope, either a mil-dot, or like the NP-R1 or NP-R2, with known graduations on the wires. With the known graduations, you can still appriximate distance, and use them for hold over, and have a scope that is not so busy.

tsr1965, in general how do rate/like your NF scope ? i am thinking about adding one to my inventory. when you shoot paper, how well does it group ? 0 -
USN,
It groups better than the Leupold MK4's that I have played with. I got my first one used from a friend. He had a MK4 on hos 700 varmint in 22-250. Took it off and put on the NF which he sold me too, when he switched to S&B. The NF grouped better, and had better repeatability than the MK4 too. Unless you already have like a Schmidt & Bender PMII, Ziess Diavari, or USO, you really can't go wrong with a NightForce.

The NF scopes are awsome.
I like the IOR MP-8 Dot reticle for shooting small things. It is easy and fast to pick up and still accurate. While there is lots going on in the scope it is not in the way.
