AK-47 Advice

I am going to buy an AK-47. What is the best make or country to buy from? Is there a specific seller on gunbroker.com that sells high quality AK-47's? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    You are asking for the best. As far as shooting and return on investment I would get a polytech legend. As far as sellers, just buy it from a seller with reputable feedback.

    Be sure and buy one of the original imports from either Hungary or Yugoslavia. Don't get stuck with one of the homemade bubba's basement parts guns though.

    I will say go with a milled reciever, and don't look back. Some of the good ones are Arsenal(they make both milled and stamped reciever models), or if you can find one an SLR-95(it will have a thumbhole stock). Arsenal makes a model with a sidemount for a scope too. If you want a truly great one, a Poly Tech Legend. The milled are generally more pricey than the stamped recievers, but well worth the extra change.

    Thanks Guys! After looking at the Polytech Legends I think I need to restate my question. What is the best AK-47 I can get in the $500 - $800 range?

    You can buy a Russian Saiga, do the mods or keep it as is.
    There's a host of mods available for them just Google Saiga.
    The result will be well within your budget.

    Check out the Arsenal Saiga's that www.k-var.com is selling. This is probably the best deal out there on a top quality AK.

    Should be within your price range.

    According to the Robinson Arms website, they have VEPR II's again. I have one and it is far superior to my other AKs. Atlantic Arms had good Russian AKs in your price range. I have a Romanian WASR 10/63. The bluing is sloppy and unevenly applied, the engraving looks as if it was done by hand and by someone with the detox shakes. The receiver was milled to accept the double stack mag and grind marks are all over the place. The mags fit very tight or not at all. I paid $380 and now I see them for $420. If it shoots, these are okay. If you go to AK-47.net, they will tell you its not a "true" AK. But there are many good one's out there.

    For my money, it is hard to beat the Norinco or Polytech MAK90 rifles. You can easily find them in your price range and maybe even a milled receiver which is very similar to the Legend series you spoke of earlier. You can change the stocks and fire control groups or mags with USA made and be 922r compliant. These are not kit guns or part guns. Good luck.

    For $500 and over I'd go with Arsenal, NV or a nice Yugoslavian.
    I own the "cheap" Romanian WASR 10 and love the thing ($400-lower). My only complaint on the WASR is the Mag well is tight and doesn't accept all magazines. I've never heard a legitimate complaint about Arsenal or Yugos.
