45 colt in a454 casull

When i shoot 45 long colt amunition in my 454 i can see gas stains down the side of my spent brass about 1/2 the length.I was concerned about the possibility of my cylinder being streched because of a fouling ring from 45 and then firing the 454 and streching it.There is a step at the muzzel end of the cylinder about where the case ends and i wanted to know if the ruger red hawk was machined like that from the factory or if it is ringed from the carbon line.The 454 brass looks fine after it is fired .Thanks Don

    The gas streaks are likely due to low pressure not expanding the case fully. It is unlikely that firing 454 ammo after using 45 Colts would "stretch" your cylinder. Cases might stick if the cylinder is not cleaned well after shooting the shorter ammo and carbon buildup might raise the pressure of the already skyhigh 454. The "step" at the front of the chambers is correct, not a carbon ring.

    Don't worry. Your revolver cylinder is made of hardened steel designed to handle 50,000 PSI of .454 Casull ultra-magnum pressure.

    A little carbon in there isn't going to damage anything. Remember the cartridge cases are made of soft brass. If anything is going to yield, the brass will yield first.

    You're also not going to "stretch" or otherwise damage the cylinders with a measly 17,000 PSI of black powder era .45 Colt loads.

    If you shoot enough 45 colt to build up a "ring" it is likely you will not be able to chamber a 454 without considerable effort. Much in the same way a diet of 22 short ammo will make a 22 long rifle difficult to chamber- the solution? clean it!
