Lead fouling?
I recently bought a Colt Trooper on the auction side, and was wondering what lead fouling looks like? After cleaning for what seemed like forever, the bore still looks dark in spots and shiny in others.

Don't waste your money. The kit works well but some 0000 steel wool on an old bore brush will do it about the same and a lot cheaper. 0 -
Do swabs come out dirty?
Not all dark areas are fouling.

I'm a believer in the Lewis Lead remover and prefer their brass patches to even 0000 steel wool. That said, I've also found that the Outer Foul Out units (either battery operated or AC) are absolute death on lead deposits. I wonder if jacketed bullets may iron as much lead into the barrel as they push out????? Anyone studied that aspect in any detail??? 0 -

It just covers the lead up with copper making it all the harder to remove. Buy the Lewis Lead Remover, America needs the jobs and it is a very effective lead removal method.0 -
I have tried the liquid lead removers, they suck!! I shot some jacketed ammo a few days ago and very poor accuracy. I couldn't hit the broadside of a barn from 10 yds!! The lands in the bore are barely visable and it looks like waves or maybe small hairs sticking up everywhere. The patches are coming out sort of black to dark gray. I did get lucky and find a local gun shop with a Lewis lead remover. I am the proud owner of it and will try it tomorrow or Thursday. I will definatly update you on how it goes. Another thing that works very well is Chore Boy Copper pot scrubbers. Just tear some of it off and wrap around your brush. Just be sure it is copper and not copper coated steel. 0 -
The oldest and best way to get lead out of a barrel is mercury, but I don't think it's OSHA approved.[;)]
