Good .45 for plinking

Who makes a cheaper .45 that would be sufficient for plinking and costs around $400?

    I have a Rock Island Armory .45 and I love it. Check the auction side for Bellshire guns.

    I bought a Charles Daly for just this purpose. After a few hundred rounds the factory ambi safety cracked and was replaced with a brand name one (Chip Mc Cormick or similar, I am not 100% sure) so remember sometimes the parts on the budget guns are not the best. I use Colt factory mags, and so far it has been 100% reliable with plinking ammo (230 gr hardball)...Rock Island has a good rep for these types of lower cost guns, and the others seem to like theirs so I'd say give them a try.

    A .22 is for "plinking". (numerous rounds, low cost)

    If you are looking for a "limited use .45" look at the Rock Island or the Hi-Standard. Can't really recommend either since they are soft metal and the fit of the parts is only adequate, but they will fire and often time even hit what they are aimed at. The Hi-Standard has a better name in case of issues. Might also try the Taurus, have not fired one, but have heard some good things about them. My guess is that all three will be over $400 OTD.

    They are not a Colt, Kimber, S&W, or Springfield. So remember you are getting what you paid for.

    Actually, there are a fair number of low-end .45 guns that *could* be used for plinking.

    I'd check out Ruger, and then Taurus and Astra, etc.

    You can probably find a surplus/used Smith and Wesson .45 auto for that price range, and that's actually not a bad way to go.

    I also think you can probably find a police trade in Glock .45 for about that price range, and again, not a bad way to go (if you like Glocks).

    You could buy TWO Hi-point guns for $400. . .though personally, I wouldn't consider those adequate for plinking.

    If you by ".45 auto", you mean 1911 guns only, there are somewhat slim pickings at that price range. Basically none of the better manufacturers have product at $400, though I think the third tier makers guns (Auto Ordnance, Charles Daly, Rock Island, etc) should be OK for plinking.

    If you open things up to used guns, your selection will increase dramatically, I think.

    Also, look at the EAA Witness. Saw an auction for one in 45 w/ the steel frame *with* a 22lr conversion kit for $500...

    I've got a Century Arms 1911 made in the Philapeans that after some trigger working is very good. The only difference between a colt and anything else is Who tuned it. It cost me $300.00
