Whats the best caliber for plinking and some target shooting 9mm, .45, .40 etc. ??

    I have to agree with the first post. A .22lr will let you shoot a lot and really build your shooting skills. There really is no replacement for rounds down range.
    I have a lot of guns and almost always I break out the .22lr's first and get warmed up, then shoot the bigger guns. Then, if I have time, I shoot some more .22lr's when I am done.

    That said, if you are talking about handguns, the 9mm is probably the next obvious round due to its lower recoil and lower cost per round compared to other pistols.

    Once you master those, then you can move up to magnum level guns. If you are a revolver guy, you can get a nice .357 or .44 mag. Otherwise, if you are like me and like semi-auto pistols, you can then move up to a nice .45 or for mag level performance from a standard pistol platform - the 10mm auto.

    22LR is my first and favorite. You can shoot 500 rounds for the price of 50 of the centerfire rounds you mentioned.

    I don't even think this is debatable, since .22LR is an intrinsically accurate cartridge, a cheap one, and a very easy to shoot one (low noise, low recoil). Unless money is no object, .22LR will let you put more rounds downrange building skills better than the other.


    If you limit this to centerfire ammo, I'd say either 9mm luger or .38 special, depending on whether or not you like revolvers.

    If you are talking about SERIOUS competition type target (eg bullseye) shooting, the one you want is .45ACP. That's for a couple of different reasons, but one major one is just that bigger bullet = bigger hole = more likely to hit scoring ring. Another big reason is that accurized 1911 pistols have a LONG tradition of being used in competition, and they're relatively available.

    Of course .45ACP isn't bad for self-defense either.
