Ithaca 1911a1 serial number ?

I have aquired an Ithaca 1911a1 with a strange sn# 2779xxx.It's a few numbers higher than anything I can find,anyone know what I have?

    We need to see photos. Instructions for posting photos can be found on a sticky near the top of the first page of this forum. Photos should be close enough that we can read all markings on the barrel, slide, & frame.

    Great find I dont see anything that High as to serial numbers does it have any inspector marks. We Would love to have pictures .

    Hello the inspector mark on the left side just above the magazine release F.J.A. is the inspector Colonel Frank J. Atwood This is the correct inspector for all ITHACA 1911A1's the Crossed Cannons marking on the Right side close to the Hammer pin and sear pin is also correct. Colonel Atwood was an army inspector not a Ithaca employee.
    He retired March 1946 so the pistol was made before that date but the last entry I see is Ithaca was assigned numbers 2619014 - 2693631 with the last pistol made by Ithaca being serial number 2660318. I hope this helps.

    EDIT I think it is safe to say your pistols serial Number is a mystery . If you live near Louisville Ky I would strongly suggest you bring your pistol to the BIG gunshow this Feb 20-21 and show it to Mr. Charles Clawson MR. colt 45 auto His book is out of date and he could authenticate your pistol and may picture it in any book he writes in the future I am taking a few of my WW I vintage Pistols to have him record the serial numbers for the same reason His BIG BOOK has only been published one time and can bring over $1000.00 . If he comes out with a second edition " he has told me he would not" but even if he would put picture of yours in his smaller Sub book it would increase the value $$$.

    I hate to say this, but I believe that your gun has bogus markings, including the serial number. Rather than being stamped, they appear to have been applied with a pantograph. The letters on the slide markings are actually touching, something never seen on a genuine Ithaca. And, the font of several of the numbers in the serial number are quite different from those used on known 1945 Ithaca's.
