Evansville Ordnance Plant 45 ACP Ammo
I was sorting through my ammo stash yesterday and came upon two mint boxes of Evansville Ordnance Plant 45 ACP ammo. Now, when I say mint, I mean MINT! They're as crisp and as fresh as the day they left the factory--no flaws, no tears, no tape, and no dirt. In fact, they've never been opened and I hesitate to peek inside for fear of messing up the boxes.
Top of the box reads (from top to bottom):
Line 1: 50 CARTRIDGES
Line 2: PISTOL BALL
Line 3: STEEL CASE AMMUNITION (this stamped in black ink after box was printed)
Line 4: CALIBER .45 M1911
Line 5: AMMUNITION LOT E.C. 24612S
Line 6: EVANSVILLE ORDNANCE PLANT
There are no other markings of any kind.
Here are my questions: 1) shoot em or sell em? There seems to be quite a bit of this EC ammo for sale on the web, but I haven't seen any in a condition this nice. I'd rather sell it if a collector would gain from owning the stuff; 2) any harm in shooting this ammo? Will the steel case or age pose a problem?; 3) When was this ammo produced? There's no date stamp on the box.; 4) Should I open a box and peek inside? I understand this ammo might be more rare if it has a refrigerator headstamp on the case. Again, however, I hesitate to crack it open because the boxes are so pristine.
Would appreciate anything you experts have to say. Thanks.

THE RIGHTperson will pay you more then replacement current ammo if in nice condition BUT only at a face to face transaction swap meet or Gun-show. IMHO if you try to ship then no-one will pay for the ammo and shipping at a price you can buy current ammo. [:(] One other thing you might want to consider is I broke 2 Extractors on 1911 type pistols shooting this stuff in two different 1911A1's [:(]. on this type pistol no big cost involved but on another type of pistol it may cost more Plus be harder to find a replacement part. I have a book published by Chrysler Corporation 1946.
They owned the plant. The book is titled "Bullets by the Billion".0 -
They were most likely made in 1942 or 1943 (ya, they made so many that the military had them stop production before the war was over).
The "special" thing you have is the condition of the boxes.
The ammo is safe to shoot, but is also corrosive as all get out (the only non-corossive military ammo from this era is for the 30 Carbine)
EC (Evansville Chysler) and ECs (Evensville Chysler, Sunbeam)headstamped 45's are not considered rare by collectors0
