Rifle feeding problem

A freind of mine bought a savage model 12 with a 24" heavy fluted barrel .308 the problem is when it comes to the last round in the magazine it kicks the case head out and the bolt closes on the case body. Seems like maybe a feed rail problem?

The last round is the only the only one it does this with.

Also the rifle has Choate skelton stock on it. If any body knows anymore info about it I would like to know. It is not shown on Savages website.

    Likely has something to do with the follower and/or spring being tweeked when the Choate stock was installed. Does this stock use the Savage mag box or just a blind hole in the stock like their Mauser stocks. I've had problems with 2 other Choate stocks- Mauser 96 and 98 both last round misfeeds.

    It uses a Savage magazine box. I believe that the stock may have come on it from the factory. The stock says Designed by Major John Plaster. Manufactured for Savage Arms Inc. by Choate machine& tool company.

    I don't know what has been done to it he just got it today.

    Beats me then.It would seem unlikely a factory assembled rifle would have a problem feeding .308 ammo. Stuff happens.

    I had a Savage 12 VLP in .204 that would not feed reliably. Savage customer service said that it needed a different spring. While that was on order from Savage, it also had trigger problems (would not fire reliably), and would not group less than about 1 or 1.25 MOA with factory ammo. So, before the new spring ever came (and it never came), the rifle went down the road.

    I do not know if your issue is similar. But, I have never had so many issues with one new rifle. Has anyone heard of quality control?

    Just an update I found it. The spring under the follower needed to be bent slightly,The follower was pointing down hill and when I tweaked the spring itleveled the follower out and fed the round perfect.

    I suspect the extractor isn't tight enough to hold the extracting case against the bolt face so without another case underneath it, it slips down.
    By jacking the follower up it supports the case until it strikes the ejector.
    If you operate the bolt rapidly, it may eject properly but, I'd be looking at the extractor fit on the cartridge case.
