Metal fillers for minor surface dents in gun steel

I have a question about metal fillers for minor surface dents in gun steel/stainless steel, is that the recommended way to remove dents in gun steel and will it bond with the steel and can it be duracoated/painted/blued afterwards?
Which brand or brands are recommended and are there different colors?

    "duracoated/painted"=bondo, "blued"=welding w/same steel filler rod. welding may result in a slightly different color 'blue' because of changes in any 'hardning' on the part in question. usualy when a firearm is reblued, it is also repolished. this removes most minor dings/dents.

    In my 70 years (over 60 as a gun owner/shooter) I have never seen a profesional gunsmith use bondo or plastic filler (JB weld is plastic)
    on the outside metal surfaces of a gun.

    I have never applied such fillers to guns, but I HAVE spent several hours cleaning/removing the residue of other's failed attempts. Most are easily applied, especially if you believe the marketing claims made by most. Such claims are intended to get you to spend $$ on hopes of an easy fix.

    Your question is very broad & lacks specific detail as to what you want to do:
    1) Type of metal
    2) location & degree of damage (a picture would help)
    3) Final finish required after repair (plastic will not stay put during 'bake-on' processes)

    Without facts, any answer is merely conjecture.

    I have not tried it on surface dents but I have use the Duracoat hardener on groves and gaps. I have put in 2 rear site blanks and fill them smooth on 10/22 barrels. This leaves some gaps where the blank is not made exactly like the hole, so I just put straight hardener in it.

    I also have a Marlin Papoose that someone grooved (well tried) the side of the receiver in 2 places. Again I filled it with Duracaot hardener and seems to be holding so far.

    You would not be able to blue these but painting or Duracoating will work just fine.

    As an alternative option is there any way to darken stainless in order to be more of a matte gray without ruining the firearm?

    Not certain that its sad that the technology of epoxys and plastics are expanding the options of available solutions to problems. I have seen lots of failed attempts using traditional methods of soldering and other older methods of repairs.
    It really depends on what problem you have and what final solution you are seeking.
