Can you help me?
Assuming two projectiles have the same energy at the muzzle in foot-lbs, do they have the same recoil? Assuming the guns are equal weight. Equal and opposite reaction, etc.

I have notieded the recoil from it is different when using steel or lead. While using full choke
Steel= More Recoil

1 1/4 oz. of shot
BB shot
Velocity 1300 FPS
Lead=Less recoil

I just wonder why the steel has more recoil? Any input

no, not by a long shot (pun intended), muzzle energy is a product of velocity and bullet weight with the edge toward velocity. a 'fast' 30 cal. will have more m.e. than a 'slow' 45 cal. but the .45 will still 'kick the snot' out of you. 0 -

I don;t disagree with what you are saying, but I don't think this is the answer to his question. If both have the same ME then the recoil will be the same. Your answer is about different ME for different loads (not the question).

I agree with Maalox. Now Felt recoil is a different bag of worms.depends on weight of fire arm try one of the +P+ 357 mag cartridge in a S&W super lite weight revolver and then try same round in a N frame 6 inch pistol by the same maker or a 30-06 in a heavy barreled Remington and then the same round in a super lite weight. 0 -
In a word, no.
Recoil is proportionate to the bullets MOMENTUM, not kinetic energy.
Given two identical guns of identical weights, firing bullets with identical KINETIC ENERGIES, the one firing the HEAVIER BULLET will have more recoil.
The perfect example of this in the real world is the 230 grain .45 ACP pistol round at 800 fps vs the 115 grain 9mm luger round at 1100 fps.
If you check the numbers, you'd find that both rounds offer similar kinetic energies (about 300 ft-lbs). But fire them both from similar guns, and you'll find that the .45 offers more recoil.0 -

The law of physics still stands, for an action there is an equal & oposite reaction.
YAH BUT! as Mr. Wiskey points out, for "equal" you will have to have equal loads in the same gun. The wild card in this formula is called INERTIA.
With a ball, toss it to a friend to catch. Next bat the ball with an open hand about the same speed & distance. You will notice with the increase in launch speed, the felt reaction increases.
With any of your guns, try loading a few rounds with the fastest burning powder listed & a few with the slowest burning powder, loaded to the same approx. muzle velocity & everything else equal.
If your bullet reaches exit velocity in the first 1/4 of your barrel & then maintains speed, the inertia will be noticibly more as opposed to a smooth exceleration over the entire barrel length. Likewise the felt recoil will increase.
The heavier the bullet (as eluded to by mike wiskey) the more noticible recoil due to the increase in inertia of the bullet.

Thanks guys, especially Cowboy. Good tool. I'm not a hand loader, but I was able to use the tool to get a result.
I was afraid to ask my real question, because I knew I would get a bunch of opinions.
Here's what I'm looking at.
3" 20 gauge vs 2-3/4" 12 gauge slug. It appears they can (by brand, etc) have about the same muzzle energy. (Velocity and mass are inverted.) The 20 ga shoots flatter, because of the velocity. Assuming the guns weigh the same, I expected recoil to be the same. But, now I see my error. I believe it takes more force to get the heavier object to move, therefore more energy is expelled at the very beginning of the sequence.
I think this is what Cussed is saying. Or close to it.
So, in math terms, the 20 ga really seems like a superior load. It has less recoil, shoots flatter and arrives on target quicker. It does shed energy faster, but is still within 35 ft-lbs of the 12 ga at 125 yds. And, the smaller faster bullet bucks wind better.
The only possible down side is the smaller wound channel.
So, ok, opinions please.0 -
I don't think any of you have hit on the correct (from a physics point of view)answer. Saserby said " the two cases have the same energy", therefore that is not the question, which makes the equation for Kinetic Energy useless. Felt recoil from stock design, ergonomics is also not the question. The question at hand is that of Force, wherin F=MA ( FORCE = MASS X ACCELERATION ). Recoil is the force in this senerio. To sight the extreme in two seperate examples, (I have not done the math in this specific example). Example 1---To accelerate a 4,000 lb. car 0.1 MPH, might take the same force as it would to---Example 2--- accelerate a 40 gr. .22 cal. bullet to 4,000 ft. per second. Equal force (by definition), substantially different recoil if hit by either of these masses. Lastly, apparently equal forces are highly affected by the lenght of time the force is applied. IMO HAWKSHAW 0 -
Don't forget the weight of the powder charge and or wads etc. Should I mention jet effect? 0 -
