Early Winchester 52 questions(pics below)
I just picked up an early Winchester 52 in what appears to be original condition except there is a small screw on the top of the stock which threads into a brass sleeve. I thought it might be for a marbles type rear sight, but it looks like it is too far back for that. Besides it has the regular ladder rear sight. Any idea what it would be for? The screw is about the size of studs usually found on the underside of modern rifles for quick detaching slings.
Second question is any idea how much it might be worth? I'll post pics later tonight. SN is 14XX which I believe is 1923 production. I don't think the mag is original, looks too good. No D&T anywhere. Some blue missing in the trigger guard and on the top of the fwd end of the reciever. Bore looks good. Entire rifle needs a good cleaning. Looks like it was sitting in a closet a long time. No rust, probably 90% blue remaining. Stock looks very good, a little shiney so may have been refinished at one time. Taking wifey to dinner for her birthday tonight so will post pics asap. I'm not a Winchester collector, nor do I have much interest in them, but it was too good a deal to pass on. TIA...Joe

Sounds like an early Model the model was not marked wit an A because they did not know they were going to make chances and later have model B or C or D or E The early models also had a cocking piece sort of like an 03 Springfield one of the first things Winchester changed was the so called SPEED LOCK with a shorter lighter cocking piece the Early model also had finger groove on the fore-arm. Even though older the A does not bring as much as the later models because the later rifles shot better groups Barrels,Triggers ETC All the magazines were the same from A-D I think the E only came single shot. 0 -

i have two eary models a 1926 and a 1929 i have no screw like that..you have to remember that the gun was a starting point and new owners would add all sorts of non factory options 0 -
Yes that is an early model with original cocking piece before the Speed Lock and it also has early barrel band The magazine is aftermarket not Winchester the trigger guard and receiver look like much more wear to finish then the barrel and bolt. Of course the wood has been refinished My idea would be about $500.00. 0 -

nice old winny, no clue as to the screw. also think about $500. 0 -
That's a very nice old 52. Do not use high speed .22s in it. You risk the thin left locking ear. 0
