Sounds like an early Model the model was not marked wit an A because they did not know they were going to make chances and later have model B or C or D or E The early models also had a cocking piece sort of like an 03 Springfield one of the first things Winchester changed was the so called SPEED LOCK with a shorter lighter cocking piece the Early model also had finger groove on the fore-arm. Even though older the A does not bring as much as the later models because the later rifles shot better groups Barrels,Triggers ETC All the magazines were the same from A-D I think the E only came single shot.

i have two eary models a 1926 and a 1929 i have no screw like that..you have to remember that the gun was a starting point and new owners would add all sorts of non factory options

Yes that is an early model with original cocking piece before the Speed Lock and it also has early barrel band The magazine is aftermarket not Winchester the trigger guard and receiver look like much more wear to finish then the barrel and bolt. Of course the wood has been refinished My idea would be about $500.00.

That's a very nice old 52. Do not use high speed .22s in it. You risk the thin left locking ear.
